Date: 27 November 2024
School: Evergreen Primary Academy
Participants: Y4, Y5 and Y6 (around 70 students)
The Asian Energy Studies Centre had the pleasure of conducting an engaging workshop at Evergreen Primary Academy for the students of Year 4 - 6. This workshop, designed in collaboration with the Inspire Sustainability team, led by Dr Laura Fogg Rogers at the University of the West of England (UWE), focused on important themes such as energy consumption, energy saving, and renewable energy.
We explored with the students the various ways energy is consumed in their daily lives. They gained insights into different energy sources and the importance of saving energy. One of the most exciting parts of the workshop was the hands-on activity: “Build Your Own Wind Turbine.”
Students were tasked with designing and constructing their own wind turbines, focusing on creating efficient blades to maximize electricity production. This activity not only encouraged creativity but also prompted students to think critically about design improvements to enhance efficiency. Students experimented with different blade shapes and shared their findings with one another.
Joshua Warren, the Education Coordinator for the Inspire Sustainability team at UWE, noted, “All looked like they enjoyed the activity, and we were able to have some deeper conversations about energy as a precious resource. Many students, particularly those in Year 5 and 6, developed a greater awareness of the need to save on energy bills.”
This workshop not only educated students about energy but also empowered them to think about their role in energy conservation. We were thrilled to see such active participation and engagement, making it a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.
Thank you to Evergreen Primary Academy for hosting us and to Joshua Warren and the Inspire Sustainability team for their collaboration and support. We look forward to more opportunities to inspire young minds about energy and sustainability in the future!
